This 20cm handmade drum lampshade is a tiny snowy village you can switch on.

The fabric is a bold, cheerful red, scattered with falling snow and dotted with little mustard and blue houses wearing their snow like woolly hats. Blush pink hills roll across it, where tiny sledgers are whizzing downhill, snowmen are keeping watch (one in a very smart blue hat) and a couple of dogs are having the time of their lives.

It’s end of line fabric rather than vintage, but I picked it because it has a distinctly 80s feel. Think retro children’s book illustration, or the Christmas decorations your nan kept in a biscuit tin. Nostalgic without being twee, and a lot more fun than another tartan.

When the lamp is lit, the red glows and the little houses seem to come alive, so you notice something new every time you walk past. 

It’s small enough for a bedside table, a hallway console or a shelf, and it’s the sort of thing that makes a room feel like Christmas without a single bauble. It would also make a rather lovely gift for someone who already has too many Christmas candles.
