There were piles upon piles of beautiful textiles she'd collected over a lifetime, each one waiting patiently for someone else to fall in love with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd then there was this.  An original length of G.P. \u0026amp; J Baker's Chinese Hydrangea from 1976.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInto my basket it went.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor years I couldn't quite bring myself to cut into it. It was going to become curtains... no, perhaps a dress... no, definitely cushions...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the end, it simply waited. Which, as it turns out, was exactly the right thing to do, because now it gets to do what it does best, steal the show.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMade by hand as a generous 30cm drum, the deep inky blue linen is scattered with joyful hydrangea blooms, while the sky blue lining gives the whole thing the loveliest soft glow once the lamp is switched on. It's double-sided because beautiful fabrics deserve beautiful insides too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the nicest things about making shades is rescuing fabrics that deserve another chapter. Some are vintage. Some are remnants. Some have travelled halfway across the country after being discovered in charity shops, antique fairs or wonderfully overstuffed sewing rooms. Every one has a story. This just happens to be one of my favourites - not even kidding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the first shade I've ever made from this fabric, and for now it's the only one I'm letting out into the world.
